Join us for a BBQ dinner followed by a screening of Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom, a feature-length film that teaches and inspires about the cultural and spiritual significance of the Juneteenth holiday. Through the film, we'll travel to Texas with pastor and Where Ya From? host Rasool Berry to learn how Juneteenth inspires a faith stronger than suffering. A brief time of discussion will take place after the film.
*While we won't have childcare, we'll have a room with toys/activities for younger kids. Please use your best judgment about your kiddos attending.
Juneteenth Day reflects dynamic truths about faith and freedom, particularly relevant to the African American experience. It's the day an order was issued in 1865 declaring emancipation in Texas, the last holdout state. The holiday was first celebrated in churches, revealing a deep connection between faith and freedom. The Scriptures teach of Jubilee (Leviticus 25), the time prescribed for justice and freedom to be restored throughout Israel. Jesus, in his inaugural sermon, announced that his kingdom would consummate God’s kingdom of righteousness and justice, through the church and throughout the world. When people are freed from injustice, Earth becomes a little more like Heaven.
